Why You Need To Get Involved In Your Church

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

Does the thought of adding one more thing to your plate cause you anxiety? I know it did for me for many years. However, when I chose to start putting God first in my life, this anxiety started melting away. Then getting involved in my church and ministry started filling in while not only filling time, but helping me grow as a Christian! Lets talk more about how and why you need to get involved in your church and how a simple act of worship can change so many aspects of your life.

Serving in your church, whether you are a member or not helps you find connection. Serving is typically done with others. This leads to fellowship and relationships within the church family.

The Lord has blessed us with all the abilities we need to fulfill his work on this Earth. When we give ourselves to serve His purpose, not only will we be fullfilled spiritually, we will also be on our way to Heaven as this is God’s work.

Serving your church and church family does not mean working full time, becoming a Deacon or even spending long hours at the church. Churches are run by the congregation and in order to be fruitful and sufficient, they rely on help from their members. There are so many ways to serve in a church. Each church is different and has different needs so talk to your leadership to find out what they specifically need.

See below a list of some of the ways you might be able serve your church:

As you can see, there is a plethora of options and skill level needed to run a church efficiently. Some tasks are as simple as spreading the word and others take time and commitment. See what your schedule looks like and talk to your church leaders about how you can help.

  1. Help with a Spring Cleaning
  2. Work a Sunday in Children’s Church
  3. Welcome members or man the door
  4. Hand out pamphlets
  5. Be a youth leader
  6. Host a gathering of a small group
  7. Volunteer for a church sponsored community outreach (or even organize and lead one)
  8. Invite family and friends to your church to help with attendance (this can also be ministry as a simple act of invitation may be a catalyst to leading someone to the Lord)
  9. Traffic control
  10. Music ministry (play an instrument or sing in the chorus)
  11. Host a bible study or group ministry
  12. Transport someone to service who can’t get themselves there
  13. Visit those who are sick or can not attend (hospitalized or homebound)
  14. Give financially (Tithe and then some)
  15. Network socially by sending cards (birthday, anniversary, get well, birth)
  16. Cook for an event
  17. Help with IT (sound system or recording)
  18. Building maintenance
  19. Join missions
  20. Support missions financially
  21. Volunteer your personal special skills (construction, health teaching, cooking, IT, website design)

Many years ago, when I was first getting back into church, we were attending a megachurch and I was going to a small group-lady’s bible study during the week. The leader told a story about how hectic her life had been. She was overwhelmed with all that she was doing and never had time for herself, let alone time to help in her church. Was all the stuff she was doing meaningful or purposeful? Sure, it probably was to someone. You see, my husband often says, if you don’t fill up your time with what is important to you, someone else will fill up your time for you. This is so true. They likely don’t do this to be mean or needy. They are likely looking for help. As humans, we are naturally “helpers”. We want to help people and we want to make people happy so we offer our services. This is fine if you truly have the time to give and the service is meaningful to you. It is hard to tell people “No”. It is also hard to be told “No”.

During the story from the small group leader, whom I had never met before this night, she confided that she had had a horrible car accident not that long ago. She talked about how after pulling through, she had months of therapy that consumed her time. It took her a long while to stop worrying about all of the commitments she had and to focus on her healing.

She said that she truly believes this was God’s way of telling her to “slow down and change your focus to serving Me”.

Since that time, she had started meaningfully scheduling her time. She started telling people “no” when the task was not in line with her new philosophy of serving God. She was able to start attending her church and small groups and even started leading this one. Her life changed and her focus was clear.

Your church servitude is not meant to be all consuming. You just have to do your part.

Ephesians 4:15-16

15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Remember, we are all part of the church. Each member serves as a piece of the body. A body is most efficient and productive in accomplishing it’s mission when each part has a role and does it’s job. Together, your church can grow and prosper.

What are you comfortable with? Start there. As you meet others and fulfill your purpose, the Lord will call you to do more. He will show you what he needs from you. It may be out of your comfort zone but he may be helping you grow. When you submit to the Lord’s plan, your life will become spiritually purposeful.
